Undeclared Allergen Recalls

An undeclared allergen recall means a food contains an ingredient that isn't listed on its label — most often milk, egg, soy, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish or sesame. These are among the most common food recalls in the United States, and they usually trace back to a packaging mix-up, a supplier changing a formulation, a shared production line, or a label printed in another language without U.S. allergen declarations.

What makes these recalls unusual is who they affect. For most people the product is perfectly safe to eat — the danger is specific to someone avoiding that ingredient, who had no way to know it was present. That's precisely why accurate labeling is a legal requirement rather than a courtesy, and why a recall gets issued even when the food itself is not contaminated in any way.
