Food Recalls

Food recalls happen when a product already on shelves turns out to be unsafe or mislabeled — contamination with bacteria like Salmonella or Listeria, an allergen missing from the label, or foreign material such as metal or plastic that got in during production. Some are announced by the company itself; others follow testing by regulators or an investigation into people getting sick.

This page tracks recalls covered by two agencies: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which oversees most packaged food and produce, and the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, which handles meat, poultry and egg products. Every recall below links to its official government notice, and each page lists the specific lot codes, best-by dates and package sizes affected — the details that actually tell you whether the item in your kitchen is part of the recall.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if the food in my kitchen is part of a recall?+

Match the specific codes, not just the brand. Recalls almost always cover particular lot numbers, best-by dates and package sizes rather than every unit ever made. On packaged food these codes are usually printed in small date-coding ink on the side seam, the bottom, or near the top seal — not on the front label. If your codes don't match the recall notice, your item isn't affected.

Is it safe to eat a recalled food if it looks and smells fine?+

No. Contamination such as Salmonella, Listeria or E. coli is invisible and doesn't change how food looks, smells or tastes. Follow the instructions in the official notice — usually returning the item for a refund or discarding it in a sealed bag.

Why do FDA and USDA handle different food recalls?+

It comes down to the product. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service regulates meat, poultry and certain egg products, while the FDA covers nearly everything else — produce, dairy, seafood, packaged goods and supplements. That's why a chicken recall and a lettuce recall come from different agencies.
