E. coli Recalls
Most strains of Escherichia coli are harmless and live normally in the human gut, but certain ones — notably O157:H7 and other Shiga toxin-producing strains — produce toxins that cause serious illness. In recalls, E. coli most often turns up in leafy greens, sprouts, ground beef, raw flour and unpasteurized dairy or juice.
Public health agencies note symptoms can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that is often bloody, and vomiting, with young children and older adults at greater risk of complications. Because contamination usually happens before the product reaches you — in growing, processing or handling — washing produce at home doesn't reliably remove it, which is why recalls of these items ask you to discard or return the product rather than try to clean it.

Frequently asked questions
Will washing recalled produce make it safe?+
No. E. coli contamination often happens in the field or during processing and can be held tightly to the surface or drawn inside the plant, so rinsing at home is not a reliable fix. Follow the recall notice and discard or return the product.
Why is E. coli a concern in raw flour?+
Flour is a raw agricultural product that isn't treated to kill germs before packaging, so grain contaminated in the field can carry E. coli all the way into the bag. That's the reason food safety guidance advises against eating raw dough or batter.
What symptoms should I watch for?+
Agencies describe severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody, and vomiting, usually starting three to four days after exposure. A small number of cases develop a serious kidney complication, so contact a healthcare provider if symptoms are severe or persistent.
