Listeria Recalls
Listeria monocytogenes is unusual among foodborne bacteria because it can keep growing at refrigerator temperatures. That makes it a particular concern in ready-to-eat foods that never get cooked again before serving — deli meats, soft cheeses, smoked fish, prepared salads and frozen items eaten straight from the package.
Health authorities consider listeriosis especially serious for pregnant people, newborns, adults over 65 and anyone with a weakened immune system, which is why recalls involving Listeria tend to move fast and carry strong warnings. Another distinguishing feature: symptoms can appear weeks after exposure rather than within a day or two, so an illness may not be obviously connected to something eaten much earlier.
